According to a Scottish folk ritual documented in the Carmina Gadelica, a text from the 1800s, Scottish midwives would stand in the doorway of the house during a birth, brace their hands on the doorframe and chant:
Bride! Bride! Come in,
You’re welcome is truly made,
May you give relief to the woman.
